Testimonies About Son (John 5:31-47)
In this passage, Jesus addresses the Jewish leaders, highlighting various testimonies that confirm His divine authority. He first mentions that self-testimony isn't valid but alludes to other witnesses. He references John the Baptist, noting the brief joy the leaders found in his teachings. However, Jesus has even greater testimonies: His miraculous works and the Father Himself. Jesus challenges the leaders, saying they study the Scriptures seeking eternal life but miss that these Scriptures point to Him. They don't come to Jesus for life, showing they don't have God's love in their hearts. They seek human praise over divine approval. Finally, Jesus says if they truly believed Moses, they'd believe Him, for Moses wrote about Him. Their unbelief in Moses indicates they won't believe Jesus' words.
