Authority of the Son (John 5:16-30)
In this passage, Jesus responds to Jewish leaders who are persecuting Him for healing a man on the Sabbath. Jesus begins by declaring that His Father (God) is always at work and that He too is working. Jesus then describes His unique relationship with the Father, emphasizing that the Son only does what He sees the Father doing and that the Father has given Him the authority to give life and to judge. Jesus goes on to speak about the significance of hearing His words and believing in Him, asserting that whoever hears His words and believes in the one who sent Him has eternal life and will not be judged. He then speaks about the future resurrection and judgment, stating that all in the graves will hear His voice and will be raised either to life or judgment based on their deeds.
