Beast from the Earth (Revelation 13:11-18)

75 Custom

This passage introduces the second beast, often referred to as the False Prophet, who comes from the earth. The Greek term "θηρίον" (therion), translated as "beast," is used to describe this second beast that comes "ἐκ τῆς γῆς" (ek tēs gēs), meaning "out of the earth." This creature is described as having two horns like a lamb "κέρατα ὡς ἀρνίον" (kerata hōs arnion), but speaking like a dragon. Its primary role is to support the first beast (introduced earlier in the chapter), compelling the Earth's inhabitants to worship "προσκυνέω" (proskyneō) the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed.

The second beast performs great signs "σημεῖα" (sēmeia), including making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people, which serves as a means to deceive them. The beast have the power to give breath to the image of the first beast, allowing it to speak and cause those who refuse to worship the image to be killed.

One of the most notable aspects of this passage is the introduction of the mark of the beast "χάραγμα" (charagma). This mark is enforced upon everyone—small and great, rich and poor, free and slave. It is either placed on the right hand or the forehead, and without this mark, no one is allowed to buy or sell. The mark represents either the name of the beast or the number of its name.

The passage concludes with a reference to the number 666 "ἑξακόσιοι ἑξήκοντα ἕξ" (hexakosioi hexēkonta hex), identified as the number of the beast. It suggests a need for wisdom to understand this number, stating that it is the number of a man.
