Last Supper (Mark 14:12-26)

106 Custom

Markan version of the Last Supper recounts the events surrounding the event, where Jesus and his disciples look for a place to spend and share a Passover meal before his crucifixion.

The first thing the text focus on during the Last Supper is that Jesus identifies his betrayer (Judas) in verse 18, pointing to the fulfillment of Psalm 41:10. This is understood as the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy about the Messiah.

The following verses 22-24 describe Jesus breaking bread and sharing wine with his disciples, telling them that the bread represents his body and the wine represents his blood. This act becomes the foundation for the Christian sacrament of the Eucharist, also known as Holy Communion or the Lord's Supper, symbolizing Jesus' sacrifice for the sins of humanity.

In verse 24, Jesus speaks of his blood being "poured out for many" and refers to it as the "blood of the covenant." This indicates the establishment of a new covenant between God and humanity (cf. Jeremiah 31:31-34, Ezekiel 36:26-27), in which Jesus' death serves as the means for the forgiveness of sins and the promise of eternal life for those who believe in him.

In verse 25, Jesus states that he will not drink wine again until he does so in the kingdom of God, expressing the hope and anticipation of God's kingdom being fully realized in the future.
