Canine animals in ancient Israel were commonly perceived as ritually unclean (Deuteronomy 23:18) and were not usually domesticated as household pets. The term was frequently employed as a pejorative or derogatory expression. The Hebrew term for dog is כֶּלֶב (kéleb) and the Greek is κύων (kyon).
